Rogers to Carry iPhone in Canada
Published on 22/01/07

I heard a rumor today at a Vancouver Mac shop that Rogers Wireless will be carrying the Apple iPhone in Canada in late fall 2007. I’ve contacted the people at Rogers to see if I can get confirmation and will update when I get word from them.
No word yet on the data plan pricing. Wireless data costs in Canada are usually significantly more expensive than in the US and Europe. To my knowledge the only way to get an unlimited plan in Canada is to be on a special $40/month Hiptop plan. Here’s hoping the Canadian carriers realize that they need to find a way to drive those costs down.
Update - Rogers Wireless corporate communications responded with this:
You were wondering about iPhone..Lots of speculation out there. Beyond the fact that Rogers is the only GSM carrier in Canada, we have not issued any statements as to whether or when the iPhone would be available at Rogers.

[...] The rumors are flying, but so far it’s looking good for our Rogers / Apple / poutine fanboy friends up north. Will Pate, after hearing a rumor of the iPhone being headed for Rogers Wireless sometime in 2007, dug into the matter a little bit, and got this response from Rogers: “You were wondering about iPhone..Lots of speculation out there. Beyond the fact that Rogers is the only GSM carrier in Canada, we have not issued any statements as to whether or when the iPhone would be available at Rogers.” And there you have it, completely vague, but near tacit assurance that Rogers will indeed be carrying the iPhone, since it happens to be the only GSM gig in town. At least that’s what our iPhone-addled brains are reading into the situation, we suggest you draw your own conclusions on the matter. [...]

Rogers is not the only GSM provider in Canada. Fido is another one. Even though it was aquired by Rogers, it is still a separate provider.

From those I’ve talked to within Apple, the speculation is Rogers as well, but no one I’ve talked to their has any idea how or when the roll out will happen.
At this point they aren’t even sure if you’ll be able to purchase an iPhone from Apple’s online store directly or if you’ll have to go through Cingular.
A lot of it is up in the air because even internally Apple is a very secretive company and it takes a while for the plan to filter down.

The Hiptop plan from Fido is unlimited data for $20, not $40/month… which gives me hope that Rogers might do the same for iPhone…

Rogers will have the iPhone. I don’t have facts but it’s just common business sense. They will get the product that everyone wants, and it will bring yet more victims for them to abuse.. in this case, very desirable victims who have excess disposable income, exactly the kind of people that a crooked company like Rogers can sink its incompetent teeth into. Here’s your iPhone and overpriced data plan, oh sweet morsel of flesh… I hope you’ll enjoy dealing with our shoddy network, helpless staff, hostile policies and willful destruction of your credit rating by incompetent customer service and collections reps. And if you don’t like it, you can always switch to Bell… oh, right, they don’t have the iPhone, so I guess we’ll see you later!

ummm just a question do you have to by a contract to buy the iphone, and do they use sim cards like normol phones or something built in?

Rogers will NOT be carrying the I-Phone, people. They have a huge
contractual obligation with motorola & sony. If they carry it they will
be sued for failure to live up to their contract…they would lose mega-money.
The likely carrier will be Fido (although a subsidiary). Fido has no
contractual obligations.
So, those foolish enough to sign on to Rogers…tsk tsk
But the good news? You can buy the I-phone from the internet and
have it shipped here. I’m getting mine in 2 weeks.
Reece

Here’s a another clue why they WON’T land the exclusive: Apple is all business
and they don’t want to be constrained by a carrier that is essentially pleading
for exclusivity and simultaneously admitting they can’t sell the number
of units Apple wants. Apple will provide the units but will refuse to have their
hands tied with exclusive contracts that are one-sided. That’s only my
opinion of course.
Second hint? Notice how Rogers seems to be acting coy about confirming
anything? Yet, you see all this shit and rumours on the internet how they’ve
“confirmed” a contract….read closer and they have no confirmation, they have
NOTHING. Apple is dissing them as any smart business should.
I feel sorry for Rogers but they had it coming. They were too eager to sign
a contract with Motorola and Sony and now they have NOTHING. Very bad business
but its all hindsight now.
I’m betting my money on Fido.

As of yesterday, a custome service rep at Rogers said “if/when we have it, we can communicate it - I have no knowledge of the iPhone” http://iphonecanada.wordpress.com - just starting the site

It is too bad that Rogers is the cell company that will carry the iphone. I am buying out of my contract with them due to their shoddy business practices and misrepresentation of services and rules. Many other people have found out the hard way what it is like to deal with them. I like Apple and the iphone but, if Rogers is the only carrier here I can do without one.
The depths of the ridiculous and unscrupulous actions of this company know no bounds. The best option all the way around for cell service here is to go with a U.S. company that has unlimited North America plans. Even with the roaming charges it is still cheaper and at least you won’t be dealing with a company that obscures the rules of service, changes them on a whim without notification and has had numerous complaints against them for doing such things. Check out ihaterogers.ca and look into the Susan Drummond case as well. This will lead you to more complaints against this company than you can believe.
Whatever you do, do NOT sign with Rogers wireless! Their plans are about as close to a scam as I’ve ever seen in a so called legitimate business.
As an example. I have a contract with them and it comes due in 08 with a buy out option of 200.00 to get out of the contract. However, Rogers recently upped the price to buy out to 400.00. If you add extra minutes, or change your service in any way you are automatically placed on the higher buy out without being told at all no matter what the original terms of your contract were. They can change it and charge you without notice. So even if you add one minute more a month on to your “plan” it is upped to the “new” rules unceremoniously. They must know what they are doing and simply do not care at all. It speaks volumes to me that they must resort to such practices to keep customers trapped in their so called “contracts” According to them they do not have to stick to the original rules of said “contracts” at all but, expect you to find any “new” rules on the seventh page of their website each month just in case they have switched anything on you.
Furthermore, they have consistently overcharged people and called it a “glitch” you have to fight them to stop the charges while the “glitch” goes unfixed and people who do not scrutinize their bills go on paying for things they should never have been charged.
The iphone would be a neat gadget to have. I love my gadgets but, if Rogers gets the iphone then I will be damned before I buy one. One would think Apple would not want to be associated with Rogers at all.
